Not familiar with RSS feeds?

RSS feeds are the way you can automatically hear about new things on your favourite websites without having to go looking.

You need a little programme on your PC called a feed reader. You then "subscribe" to the RSS feeds on your favourite sites by copying the sites' RSS feed links into the appropriate box on your feed reader. At the same time you also tell your feed reader how often you want it to check for updates on those sites. If your computer is switched on, the reader will then check to see if there is news of new material.

Every time you run the feed reader you will see a display of the updates from your favourite websites. What you actually get from the feed is a short summary of each new item on the sites you like, plus a link to the relevant page so you can check out the new stuff if it sounds interesting.

Where can I find a good feed reader for free?

For people using Windows and Internet Explorer, a reader we have used and like is Active Web Reader. You should be able to download it from www.deskshare.com

Tell me about the orange sign

Sites use the sign to indicate their RSS feeds. You can click on the icon to get the link details that you need to select and copy into your feed reader.

I want to put an RSS feed on my site

For people who want to set up their own feeds Denis Sureau has a good step-by-step guide which is not too technical. Go to www.xul.fr

The feed can be written by hand on Notepad and saved with an .xml extension. Alternatively, if you use a feed writer programme you just have to fill in the relevant boxes and then click "save". The programme we use is called Feed Writer and is available free from www.mirabyte.com.
